If I had asked you in the first place off this program to give up high-fat sources of protein like hamburgers, sweet like cookies and candy, and greasy snacks like potato chips, you probably could have done so without any problem for a while. But how long would you have been able to resist them? Now that you’ve adopted some other healthy behaviors you’re active, consuming regular meals and snacks, using the hunger scale, and making changes to eliminate emotional eating you have habits in place that are going to make you feel less compelled to eat junky foods. So when you do eliminate most of them from your diet, the chances are greater that your decision is going to stick.

One reason why fatty, sugary, and salty foods are so prominent in the American diet is convenience. What’s easier than pulling a chocolate bar from a vending machine or whizzing by a fast-food drive - thru for a soda burger, and fries? At least that’s the way most people think. But it’s a myth that only unhealthy foods are convenient. Many fast-food restaurants and convenience stores also have healthful choices; it’s just as easy to grab a banana at the 7-eleven or the Asian salad with grilled chicken or the Fruit ‘n Yogurt Parfait at McDonald’s.

That’s one option. Another one: be prepared. If you’re like most people, you probably follow a fairly regular routine, or, at the very least, you know where you’re going to be doing most of the day, so plan for it. If you know that you’re going to be sitting at your desk at 3 p.m., struggling to keep your eyes open because you need a snack, have one of those snacks in the office refrigerator. If you know you’re going to be in your car shuttling your kids around all day, don’t leave yourself at the mercy of unhealthy quick-energy solutions: pack a lunch and/or some healthful snacks so that you don’t find yourself at the drive-thru ordering French fries. If your dining out, choose places where you know they have dishes that meet the Best Life Diet criteria and don’t let anyone bully you into deviating from the healthful way you want to eat. Good food is out there; you just need to make sure that it’s always available to you.
